Earplugs For Flying

Travelling is great. Whether you’re jetting off on a long-haul holiday, flying to the continent for a long weekend, or travelling for a quick business trip, getting on a plane brings the promise of new adventures.

But there’s one small issue: flying itself. Let’s face it, planes don’t always offer a nice, relaxing start to your trip. Whether it’s being stuck in the row behind a noisy stag or hen party, the passenger beside you snoring, or the constant cabin announcements, planes can be noisy.

But there’s one way to reduce both the volume and the stress of being stuck on a loud plane: earplugs for flying.

Why you should use earplugs for flying

Have you ever had painful ears when flying? That’s called airplane ear, and it’s caused by the rapid change in ear pressure as your plane takes off and lands, leading to pressure, pain, and the need to pop your ears.

There are a few things that can help to ease the pain, though. Chewing gum while taking off helps, as does swallowing, and wearing earplugs.

That’s not the only benefit of wearing earplugs on a plane, though. Planes can be seriously loud – louder than you might think.

When taking off and landing, airplanes can reach 105 decibels, and even when they’re cruising, noise levels in the cabin sit at around 85 decibels. That’s roughly equivalent to the volume of noisy city traffic, or just slightly quieter than a busy restaurant.

And when noise levels are that high, potential hearing damage can kick in after just 8 hours. Which means that you could be running the risk of noise-induced hearing loss on a long-haul flight.

But even if you’re not flying that far, the noise on planes can make it difficult to relax and get to sleep. Popping in a pair of airplane earplugs can help to reduce the noisy distractions all around you, from the noise of the in-flight meal service, to the sound of other passengers chatting and babies crying.

What makes Loop Earplugs ideal for flying?

Using earplugs when flying can help to make your journey that little bit more relaxing – meaning you’ll arrive at your destination feeling refreshed and raring to go, and without the sore ears that often come with noisy planes.

If you want to take the opportunity to grab some shut-eye during your flight, try the Loop Quiet earplugs, which are made from flexible soft-touch silicone for all-day and all-night comfort. They also offer up to 26.2 decibels (SNR) and 14 dB (NRR) of noise reduction.

Loop Engage earplugs are another great option for flights, especially for nervous fliers. They don’t block out noise completely, like traditional foam earplugs, but instead are designed to filter soundwaves. That means that they offer up to 16 dB (SNR) and 10 dB (NRR) of noise reduction, without affecting the clarity of your voice, so you can stay engaged with everything that’s going on around you, while taking the edge off.

Aeroplane earplugs may also help to alleviate the pain of popping ears, for a better flight experience. Plus, all of our earplugs come with a selection of ear tip sizes, for added comfort, no matter how long your flight is.

It’s about the journey, as well as the destination

But you shouldn’t have to put up with that.

After all, life is a journey to be enjoyed. And that includes flying. You shouldn’t have to sit there gritting your teeth, counting down the seconds to your beautiful destination.

You should be able to enjoy a cheeky glass of wine, gaze out the window at the clouds, and then peacefully drift off to sleep – only to wake up refreshed and ready to explore your destination.

Good news. You can do just that – with some trusty earplugs for air travel.

Ease the pressure – with in-flight earplugs

But what are the best earplugs for flying? And how do they help?

Besides being able to help you rest easily, earplugs can also ease the uncomfortable build-up of pressure in your eardrum during take-off and landing.

But many earplugs are anything but comfortable. That’s why we made them different from the rest:

Frequently asked questions

How do earplugs help with ear pain and discomfort during takeoff and landing?

Aeroplane ear is caused by a rapid increase of air pressure in your inner ear when the plane gains or loses a lot of height. Aeroplane earplugs equalise the pressure which means that you should experience less discomfort.

Will wearing earplugs affect my ability to hear announcements and communication during the flight?

Traditional foam earplugs block out sound, so you might miss in-flight announcements or not see them clearly. But earplugs like Loop Engage filter sound waves rather than blocking them so you’ll still be able to hear perfectly – just at a lower volume.

Can earplugs prevent blocked ears and temporary deafness after flying?

Sometimes people’s ears get blocked after flying due to the changes in air pressure. Using earplugs for plane travel can equalise the pressure, meaning your ears are less likely to get blocked.

Can earplugs help with pressure regulation and equalisation during changes in altitude?

When you wear earplugs on a plane, they can help to reduce the difference in air pressure as the plane takes off and lands, meaning you’re less likely to suffer from airplane ear.

Can I still use other methods like chewing gum or swallowing to alleviate ear pressure while wearing earplugs?

As well as wearing earplugs when flying, you can also try chewing gum, swallowing, yawning and using a technique called the Valslva manoeuvre to unblock your ears.

Can I wear earplugs during the entire flight or should I remove them for certain periods?

Loop Earplugs are designed to be comfortable all day long, with a choice of ear tips so you can get the perfect size. If you’re using Loop Engage earplugs, you should be able to hear announcements but if you’re wearing Loop Quiet, you may want to remove them to ensure you don’t miss any important information.
