While you can use the maximum/medium filter in noisy environments, you can switch within a couple of seconds to the "light" setting, which allows you to hear the person talking to you. I do find they're a bit bulky and heavy on my small ears, but I'm sensitive to any pressure. I find that I'm weridly between ear tip sizes, the S is a bit big and the XS is a bit small.
